Lee

Lee Roy Selmon's history combines the merits of family sports academic scholarship with volunteerism in the community. He was the eldest child of Lucious Selmon, and Jessie Selmon. Both raised him on their farm in Eufala. It was also the only one of three siblings who represented Oklahoma on the field of football. Three of them were All-Americans. In 1973, Lucious Jr. Dewey and Lee Roy were starters. Lee Roy received the Outland and Lombardi Awards for being the nation's top lineman. Oklahoma won two National Championships throughout his time as a player of the team. In 1975, he received the third scholarship of his career and was named the National Football Foundation scholar-athlete. Selmon received his bachelor's diploma in education. Fourth year of college Lee Roy devoted ten hours per week in volunteer projects. In Tampa where he played, he joined the Buccaneers nine seasons and became an all-pro. He also began a career in business. By 1988 he had become an Account Representative for Tampa's First Florida Bank and worked on the following groups: Special Olympics Easter Seals Baptist Church Ronald McDonald House United Negro College Fund South Florida Institute on the Black Life Hall of Fame Bowl Committee. It's no wonder in 1982 the Junior Chamber of Commerce named Lee Roy as one of America's most outstanding young men. In his student days, Lee Roy was 6-2 and weighed about 256 lbs. He captained his college team in the year 1975. Lee Roy joined the University of South Florida in 1993, as associate director of sports. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988 the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1994, and then the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995. His parents, Lucious as well as Mary Selmon, Jr. received the Distinguished American Award in 1989 from the Oklahoma City Chapter National Football Foundation. Henry Bellmon was the Oklahoma Governor that presented the award.
